We will be formally submitting our application for legal 501c3 (non-profit) status by the end of May, 2008.  Once non-profit status is officially awarded to us, we will be able to greatly increase our fundraising efforts.  Currently we are able to accept tax-deductible donations through our on-line donation page hosted by “Give Meaning” (see link on this page).  The budget listed on the Give Meaning donation page is specifically for the purchase of land in Mali, where we will establish a permanent ECOVA MALI field office and training center.  The budget also includes $1,000 for micro-loans and mini-grants and another $1,000 to pay for training projects.  So far we have raised over $2,000.

As we move forward with ECOVA MALI it has become clear that we want to and need to devote more time and energy to this organization, which is our true passion.  Unfortunately, we are forced to work day-jobs to make ends meet.  This limits the time and energy we are able to give ECOVA MALI.  We are in the process of developing a 3 year plan with many tangible, achievable goals.  This plan will include a detailed budget, which we will post on the website when it is done.

We are also in the process of creating a separate Fair Trade import business that will work in partnership with ECOVA MALI.  The business will purchase high-quality Malian handicrafts and value-added agricultural products at a premium price and import them for sale in the United States and worldwide through online sales.  Products will be sourced to a large extent from the entrepreneurs, cooperatives, and village associations who have participated in ECOVA MALI projects.  The business will donate at least 15% of all net proceeds to ECOVA MALI.  In this way, the business will offer new marketing opportunities for rural Malian farmers, who will receive a premium price for their goods.  This partnership will also create an income stream for ECOVA MALI, which will decrease the need for outside funding.
